An expat residing in Spain has come forward with crucial tips to help tourists avoid common scams in the country.
Madrid-based James Blick and Yoly, who boast a substantial following of 251,000 subscribers on their 'Spain Revealed' YouTube channel, are seasoned in delivering savvy advice for those looking to experience life in Spain.
In light of rising concerns among locals that tourism is affecting housing and jobs negatively, even though Spain remains one of the go-to destinations for Brits, the advice appears particularly timely.
James emphasised: "Now, let me get one thing clear. Spain is a safe country, but there are some typical scams and scammers that you need to watch out for when you visit."
1. Terrace theft
Highlighting one such scam, James alerted tourists to watch their belongings closely when seated outdoors at cafes and restaurants.
He shared a tale of a thief distracting a diner with a sign, then covering and swiping a mobile phone off the table right under their nose, reports the Express.
James' key advice is to keep personal items out of view and secure, especially while dining outside, and to be wary of placing bags with valuables on the floor or hanging them over chair backs.
2. Clipboard scam
Another dodgy tactic he mentioned was the clipboard scam. Here, individuals equipped with IDs and clipboards appear legitimate as they request signatures for a supposed petition.
The twist comes after signing, where they aggressively solicit money, sometimes demanding more than what one might have agreed to give.
James warned that the risk is when you're distracted signing a petition, as another person might pick your pocket. He advised that legitimate charities would typically collect in busy areas and cautioned people to be wary of small groups of scammers.
3. Rosemary scam
This scam often takes place in busier areas, with someone approaching you to offer a free sprig of rosemary for good luck. However, they will likely then pester you for money.
4. Free gift/bracelet scam
Similar to the rosemary scam, an individual will approach you in a tourist area and offer you a free gift, such as a carving or bracelet. They may even tie the bracelet around your wrist before you have a chance to refuse, and then demand money.
James advised people to politely but firmly decline and keep moving.
5. Taxi scams
James mentioned that taxi scams are not common in Spain, but he fell victim to one after a long flight. He advised ensuring the driver has their meter turned on, and you should only pay what's on the meter at the end of the journey.
However, be aware that sometimes, they may add a legitimate supplement at the end, depending on where you're picked up from. James also recommended using taxis from official ranks at airports and train stations.
He added that a driver will never wait for you in the terminal and you could always ask for a receipt. Ensure this is from the actual meter and not just the credit card print-out.
6. Fake ticket scams
James warned that fraudsters often set up bogus websites to sell counterfeit tickets to popular landmarks. He advised purchasing tickets from the official website or a recognised reseller like Tripadvisor.
7. Restaurant scams
The YouTuber noted that while restaurant scams are not widespread, there are certain things to be wary of. These include being served pricey wine or large beers that you didn't request.
In addition to feeling confident in asking for the price of items, James highlighted that prices must be displayed on the menu and include sales tax (10%), indicating the final cost.
He cautioned that if extra items such as bread or olives are placed on your table, you could be charged for them. Therefore, it's important to decline if you don't want them.
Furthermore, he suggested specifically requesting tap water to avoid being given bottled water, and reminded patrons that tipping is discretionary, so watch out for any added service charges.
8. Euronet ATMs
James warned that Euronet ATM machines have high commissions and provide poor exchange rates when used to withdraw cash with foreign credit or debit cards.
9. Metro scams
If someone offers to assist you with the Metro ticket machine, James advises declining their offer, moving to another machine, or informing a security guard.
In this situation, a fraudster might try to charge their ticket to you, but pickpockets are another problem on the Metro. Always keep your valuables out of your back pocket and hold your backpack in front of you.
Also, avoid holding your phone near the Metro doors to prevent it from being snatched just as the Metro departs.
10. Bird poo scam
James advised that if someone offers to clean bird droppings off your back, simply decline and continue on your way. He then shared a tale about a scammer who splattered something on an unsuspecting person's jacket.
The crook rushed over to assist them, only to steal their credit card and cash.
